Caving 2026
11–13 August 2026 | Shangri-La Ulaanbaatar, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
About the site:
Oyu Tolgoi is a world-class copper and gold mine located in Mongolia’s Umnugovi aimag, approximately 550 kilometres south of Ulaanbaatar and 80 kilometres north of the Chinese border. It is home to one of the largest known high-grade copper deposits in the world and represents Mongolia’s largest and most advanced industrial complex. Our operations are guided by a strong commitment to safety, ensuring the protection of our workforce and surrounding communities as we mine, process, and export products to international markets. While the open pit has played an important role in early production, the underground deposits, characterised by significantly higher mineral grades, are central to Oyu Tolgoi’s long-term profitability. More than 80% of the deposit’s total value lies deep underground. Over the life of the mine, average copper grades are expected to reach 1.66%. Given the depth and nature of the orebody, block caving has been selected as the most suitable mining method, both geotechnically and economically. The underground project includes the construction of five shafts with a combined depth of 6.1km, alongside approximately 203km of tunnels at depths reaching 1.3km of tunnels at depths reaching 1.3 km below surface.
